James M. Helsdon

November 26, 1944 — March 30, 2024

Tillsonburg

It is with sadness, we say goodbye to Jim, our Husband, Dad and Papa who passed away on March 30, 2024, at the age of 79, at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital.

Born in Tillsonburg to the late James and Phyllis Helsdon.  Beloved husband of Rosemary Helsdon.  Loving Father of Susan Fisher-Helsdon (John), Melanie Toth (Ted), Angela Gradish (Stephen) and Laura Gooder (Jay).  Amazing Papa to his grandchildren, in Canada - Brayden, Lauren, Ryan, Kieran, Eryn, and in the USA - Nicole, Rachel and Ryan.  Survived by his siblings Lynda Metcalfe (Brian) and Bob Helsdon (Heather), and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Jim grew up outside of Courtland and later built a home beside his childhood farm where he grew Christmas trees.  His “happy place” was Long Point and spending time with family and friends on the boat, beach and fishing.

With an amazing sense of humour, Jim was a storyteller and jokester, always making everyone he met laugh.  Whether he was playing cards with friends, going on a drive or enjoying his favourite meal he was always quick with his wit, commentating or telling a story to entertain everyone around him.

A true green thumb and lover of the outdoors, he spent countless hours in his gardens and took great pride showing people his massive hydrangeas, feeding his outdoor pets the squirrels, chipmunks and birds and planning his next project.

He also had many adventures at his Hunt Club on Manitoulin Island.  Jim had a passion for sports, playing football, basketball and baseball in his younger years and always watching his favourite teams.

He often tested his luck at the casino but ultimately, we were the lucky ones for having him as a Husband, Father, Papa, Sibling or Friend.

Thank you to the staff of 2nd South as well as Dr. Abdalla, Dr. Hayat and Dr. David at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital for your care and compassion.  You allowed Jim to fight with dignity until the very end.

Cremation has taken place.  In keeping with his wishes, a private Ceremony will be held at the Tillsonburg Cemetery, with a private Celebration of life at a future date.

If desired, donations in memory of Jim may be made to the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital Foundation directly, or (by cheque) through Wareing Cremation Services, 346 Simcoe St., Tillsonburg, Ontario who have been entrusted with Final Arrangements.
