It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Edward Carson. Surrounded by family in his last few days, he left this world peacefully at the age of 92 on September 14, 2025, at Woodstock Hospital.
John had a long and illustrious life. He was born on February 10, 1933, in Hungary, to Theresa and John Einreinhoffer, enjoying peaceful times on the family farm, and later, enduring the upheaval of WWII. Boarding a train in 1947, he left Hungary and was taken to East Germany where he continued schooling as a mechanic, then to West Germany to join extended family in Erbach. At the young age of 20, he emigrated to Canada and was soon joined by his parents and younger brother Joseph.
Once settled in Simcoe, Ontario, John worked as a mechanic and later trained as a machinist traveling to factories throughout Ontario. At a dance at the German Club in Delhi, he met and later married his beloved wife, Ethel Schmidt, in 1958, and soon after bought a farm outside of Port Dover. Together they built a house, planted apple orchards, and started a family with son Jeffrey (1965) and daughter Michelle (1969). In 1974, John and Ethel moved their young family to Woodstock, Ontario where John lived out the remainder of his life.
John was loved by his community and family. He was known for his quick wit, entertaining life stories, skillful dance moves, colourful flowerbeds, and thriving cucumber patches. Everyone knew John for repurposing old things and for having a tool for every job. He was a landlord, full of ingenuity and kindness, and an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Woodstock German Club, and the Woodstock Ski Club.
John is survived by his wife, Ethel, of 67 years, his children Dr. Jeffrey Carson (Kate Rapson), Michelle Sipley (Mike Sipley) and three beautiful granddaughters, Teia Sipley, Olivia, and Nicole Carson, brother, Joe Einreinhoffer, and sister in-laws, Mary Pike (Dr. Calvin Pike) and Emma Balsas (Al Balsas) and many nephews and nieces. Predeceased by his parents Theresa and John Einreinhoffer, sister-in-law Helen Schweighardt, and brother-in-law George Schmidt.
A funeral service will be held on Friday October 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Holy Trinity Church, 1420 Devonshire Ave., Woodstock, Ontario. A luncheon will follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of John to the Woodstock Hospital Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Canada .
