With sorrow we announce the death of Marilyn Murphy on Thursday February 6, 2025 at Woodingford Lodge, Woodstock, in her 80th year, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Marilyn was the much-loved wife and partner of Barry Murphy for almost 58 years, and loving mother of Kimberly Murphy-Shaw of Woodstock. She was the extremely proud grandmother of Ethan, Lauren and Aiden Shaw. Marilyn leaves her three siblings Murray (Karen) of Calgary and Wilberforce, Valerie (the late Jean) of Brooklin, and Trevor (Terry) of Toronto.
Marilyn was born in London, England in 1945, the daughter Lloyd Jones, and Sybil Cudby. Living in Ottawa, she completed her undergraduate education at Carleton University and later returned to complete a Master’s Degree in Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University. Throughout her career Marilyn worked in several positions in the social service field. Marilyn and Barry moved to Woodstock in 1971, and after living in the Bright area for over 40 years, returned to Woodstock in 2015.
She was a kind and generous woman, a strong advocate of women's rights and supporter of groups that advocate for the rights of, and provide support to people whose lives have been affected by poverty, racism, and gender-based prejudice. Marilyn took great joy from her garden, especially her abundant roses. She was talented at sewing and knitting and she was an avid reader, especially of British mysteries and a great fan of British television comedies and mysteries. She and Barry travelled often to Europe and within Canada. She was fond of travel to Nova Scotia, the last time being on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary
Marilyn's final months were made easier by the very much appreciated care of the staff of Woodingford Lodge in Woodstock. Her family is grateful for their kindness and thoughtfulness. Thanks to long-time friends Teresa and Wayne, and Marg and Mike for their support during Marilyn's long illness.
Marilyn has chosen to be cremated and to not have a formal funeral arrangement. Family and friends will gather together to remember and to celebrate this marvelous woman at a later date. If so chosen, a donation in Marilyn's memory can be made to Doctors Without Borders, Canadian Friends of Aniquem, or the charity of one’s choice.
