Mary Zila Doucette

          With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Mary Zila at the age of 87 at VON Sakura House Hospice, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.  Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia to the late Neil Curry McGillivray and Susan McGillivray (nee Burton), Zila showed strength and resilience throughout her final journey.

          She is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, David Doucette; sister Gina; sons Jeff (Toni) and Russ; stepdaughters Andrea (David) and Susan (Doug); grandchildren Travis, Sasha, Mason, and Evan; and many nieces, nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her son Randy; her parents; siblings Colin (Thelma), Donnie (Sheila), Thelma (Art), Reg (Barbara), Judy (Andy); brother-in-law Eugene; and first husband Bill Morrison.

          Mary had a distinguished career in Human Resources, including roles at Reader’s Digest and as HR Director at Tilwood Inc.  A passionate and creative soul, she enjoyed sewing, painting, Diamond Art, and gardening.  In retirement, she founded DaZi Weighted Blankets, supporting the Autistic community with handmade products and generous donations.

          Mary’s warmth, generosity, and radiant smile touched all who knew her.  She adored children and animals, and her grandchildren held a special place in her heart.  She was our rock—wise, loving, and endlessly kind.

          Our sincere thanks to the staff and volunteers at Sakura House Hospice for their compassionate care.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Zila’s honour may be made to VON Sakura House.
