Maurice Duncan Peter Cosyn

Maurice “Moe” Cosyn passed away at University Hospital in London, Ontario, suddenly on December 26, 2021 in his 89th year.

Moe was a most beloved husband to Isobel, his wife of 65 years, an anniversary which they recently celebrated with family in September of this year. Moe was the proud Father of Mark (Abir) of Vancouver and Maureen (Barry) of London. He was a wonderful Grandfather to Molly (19), Spencer (16) and Danya (12). He was a dear brother in law to Jean Currie of New York. He was dearly loved by all of his extended family, the Heath’s (Brantford) and the Saadi’s (Jerusalem). Moe is survived by his brothers, Lucien and Albert and a sister, Yvonne, and predeceased by sisters Gabe, Margaret, Barbara and Leah. Moe is survived by many nieces and nephews, and he and Isobel are very grateful for the companionship and support of his eldest nephew Neil and wife Brenda.

Born in Leamington in 1933, after finishing high school at just 16, Moe went to Meinzinger Art College in Detroit, Michigan, and was one of their youngest graduates. Following a successful early career in advertising and graphics, he worked at Huddleseton and Barney in Woodstock for years. He then embarked on his teaching journey, graduating from Althouse Teacher’s College in 1969, and in 1982, Moe received his Bachelor’s Degree from Western University after attending night classes for years.
Moe was an art teacher at College Avenue Secondary School (“CASS”), where he proudly taught for 24 years. Moe always took enormous pride in his job and being part of the team of three teachers that created the commercial art program and facilities at CASS. He retired as the Department Head of the Visual Arts and Graphics Department and enjoyed keeping in touch with his many students over the years, delighting in news of their success. Moe was a prolific artist, both in his early commercial career and for pleasure. Many of his permanent works are on display at locations in Oxford County, including Alexandra Hospital in Ingersoll.
Moe had many avid interests, from playing his Gibson guitar, to singing in many bands and church choirs. He was an accomplished lawn bowler, who coached and inspired many in the sport over the years. He was a member of the Woodstock Lawn Bowling Club and Ontario Lawn Bowling Association head umpire, for the province of Ontario, with numerous provincial and national championship titles to his name. In 2013, he was inducted into the Woodstock Sports Hall of Fame as a builder in the sport. He was also a life-long member at Knox Presbyterian Church and served as an elder and on the board of directors and a former member and elder at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church
in Ingersoll. Always a teacher at heart, he taught night school art classes in Woodstock and at the Ingersoll Seniors Centre for many years after his formal retirement from teaching.
He also took great pride in his home with his wife Isobel, meticulously caring for their lawns and gardens at their home on Devonshire Avenue, where they lived for more than fifty years. The home Moe and Isobel created provided lifelong happiness to their children, grandchildren, and friends. Together they were an example of giving to the community, and never tired of teaching and helping others.
