Peter H. Barrett

May 13, 1943 — Jul 29, 2026

Woodstock, Ontario

On June 29th, 2026 Peter Hargreaves Barrett succumbed to pancreatic cancer after a fierce and courageous five year battle.  Survived by his wife and love of his life Chris, Pete and Chris celebrated 60 years of marriage on June 18, 2026 surrounded by their entire family.

Beloved father of Steven (Lee-Ann), Brian (Tricia) and Erin (Doug) White, and adored granddad of Samantha, Stephanie, Quentin, Coen, Caris, and Aidan.  Pete also leaves behind his cherished siblings Penny (Lefteris) Iliadis, his twin sister Christine (late Hugh) McLeod, and Richard (late Lolly), along with nine nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

Pete was born May 13, 1943 in Derby, Derbyshire, England.  He was the son of Kenneth and Audrey Barrett. Pete and his family moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina when he was four years old, and his family spent six years there, before returning to England for one year, and then emigrating to Canada in November of 1953, at which time his family settled in Kingston.  Pete enjoyed a close relationship with his siblings, and Pete and his wife Chris spent many fun afternoons and evenings discussing, disputing, and solving the world’s problems in animated discussions with his siblings.

Pete’s chosen profession was teaching, and he had a profound impact on thousands of students over a 32 year teaching career, teaching chemistry, biology and math.  His second love was computers, and he was instrumental in making Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS), located in Desbarats, Ontario, a cutting edge school in computer technology.  Pete was also head of the Science department for many years, and retired from teaching in 1998.

Pete and Chris loved to travel together, many times crossing the Atlantic, traveling to Antarctica and the Arctic Circle.  They particularly loved sailing the open ocean.  At the age of 76, Pete and his granddaughter, Samantha, embarked on a trek to the base camp of Mt. Everest.  Always one who loved adventure, Pete jumped at the opportunity to trek with Samantha.

Pete has always been something of a dog whisperer, and sadly leaves behind his devoted dog, Woody.  The two of them could often be seen running, and later walking, the streets of Woodstock around their home.  Pete and Chris chose a fulfilling life of farming, and purchased a 75 acre farm in Thessalon, Ontario in 1974.  They raised their family and multiple animals there for many happy years, relocating to Woodstock in 2011.

Pete has been cremated, and a Celebration of Life will be held Saturday July 4th, 2026 from 1:30 to 4:00p.m. at the Woodstock Polish Hall, Small Hall, 878 Dufferin St., Woodstock, Ontario.  In lieu of flowers, donations to VON Sakura House in Woodstock would be gratefully appreciated.
