It is with sad hearts that we announce that after more than 20 years Rick has lost his courageous battle against Parkinsons disease. He faced all the challenges of this illness without question or complaint. Through it all his strength of character and sense of humour never wavered and we are so incredibly proud of him.
Born and raised in Woodstock, Ontario, Rick leaves behind his wife Nancy of 53 years, his son Justin, and daughter Corey. Lovingly remembered by his three grandchildren Jacob (Jasmine Santos), Haley, and Leigha; his older brother Mike Smith of Woodstock, younger brother Dan Smith and wife Kelly of Maple Ridge, B.C., and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Edith and Dominic (Teke) Smith formerly of Woodstock.
The family has spent the last twenty years enjoying their property because Rick knew nothing but hard work his entire life, and was always eager to help a friend or lend a helping hand. He worked for years as an electrician after acquiring his electrical license in the 1970's and retired earlier than he would have liked from Arcelor Mittel in Woodstock. What he loved most was his family, his home, and hard work; his hobby was work. It's what he loved to do.
Our family wish to thank People Care Tavistock for their unfailing support, compassionate care, and friendship. We were lucky that Rick was able to claim this as his home since October of 2024 as we came to love each and every one of the wonderful caregivers and staff who became our second family. We cannot express enough the gratitude we feel towards this group of qualified caring individuals who made his last years of life meaningful and loved. We will be forever grateful.
Cremation has taken place. Please join us to share a memory, raise a glass, and give a toast at a Celebration of Rick being held on Saturday August 15, 2026, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Charles Dickens Pub, 505 Dundas Street, Woodstock, Ontario. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the Parkinson's Foundation .
