Roy John Strickert
March 11, 1938 – September 18, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our hero, who, with his wife and children by his side passed away at Sakura House in Woodstock. It was here that he finished his exhausting, hard-fought battle with small cell lung cancer.
Roy is survived by his loving and devoted wife and caregiver of 63 years Donna (nee Betts), his children Paul (Ruth-Anne) Strickert, Linda (Jim) Leslie, and Alan (Tammy) Strickert. He was much loved and entertaining to his grandchildren Kevin, Katelyn (Cody), Derrick, Sarah, Nick, and Dylan as well as two great grandchildren Violet and Poppy, and Ruth-Anne’s children Jeff Drennan, Don (Linda) Drennan and their children Avery and Reid.
Roy is survived by his sisters Bertha Binns, Ruthann MacLeod, Janet (Garry) Wolfe, his in-laws Alice (Mike) Coles, Trudy (Darcy) Campbell, Willard (Janis) Schenck many, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and a special great great nephew Harrison Binns. Predeceased by his parents John and Mary Strickert, daughter Janice (1962), sister Marion Frame, and brothers-in-law Clifford Binns, and John MacLeod.
Roy loved his family more than anything except perhaps for driving his RV. He enjoyed eight winters in Florida, two trips to Alaska, coast to coast in Canada, and many places in between. He also fulfilled his wish to go to Newfoundland all in his RV. When not on the road he enjoyed his casinos, laying on the couch watching TV or just out tinkering on his 1950 Ford or just trying to come up with some invention. From the time his children were young, whenever his vacation time came up, he always took them on a trip somewhere in the camper.
Roy always provided for his family first. He worked 35 years at Standard Tube, retiring in 1996. In 1987 he oversaw the construction of their home on his 50-acre property, where two of his many hobbies were growing peanuts, organic potatoes, and building a motocross track for his son Alan and others that is still being enjoyed by many to this day. In 2008 he sold the property so he had less work to do and more time to travel, which he certainly did.
He was a member of the CAW Local 636 for 40 years and a strong supporter of the NDP and credit unions. If you differed from his beliefs, you were in for a debate.
The family sends a special Thank You to Dr. Jeff Nichols for all the care over the years, to St Elizabeth nursing for their care, to the London Regional Cancer Centre care team, and to the amazing staff at Sakura House for their superb care at the end of Roy’s journey.
