Vernie Herrin
July 8, 1941 – October 1, 2022

After a courageous battle with kidney failure, Vern went peacefully and pain free in the wee hours of October 1. As she was during their 56-year marriage, Janette was by his side holding his hand.  Along with Janette, Vern is survived by his daughter Verna-Lisa, grandchildren Dawson and Emma, brother and sister-in-law Ron and Gay Iles, sister-in-law Brenda Herrin and several nephews and nieces. He will be welcomed home by his parents Archie and Lucille, brother Donnie and in-laws Curly and Pauline Iles.

Vern was born in Clinch County in Georgia in 1941 to Archie and Lucille Herrin. Vern arrived in Canada in 1964 with a group of childhood friends looking for fame and fortune while picking tobacco in Tillsonburg. He found his fortune with Janette Iles and they married in 1966.

While Vern worked several jobs on a long and storied resume, the job that carried him through his life was at the Co-op (also Waterloo-Oxford Co-operative and FS Partners) in Ayr, Lynden, and Baden. During the years at this job, he befriended many and was proud to call the majority of them friends til the end. When he retired, he tried his hand at one of his earlier jobs and went back on the road driving truck.
He like to sit and chat and debate the issues of the day and always had a story to tell, sometimes you wondered how much exaggeration was involved. He liked lazy days in the pool and on the back deck. He liked old country music and he liked to dance and was known to belt out a tune or two. He also liked playing cards – euchre was a true favorite and he spent many an evening trying to avoid being skunked and in his later years at seniors’ euchre in Ayr. He also loved his animals – his last dog Bella is already missing him.

The family will be holding a private Memorial Service. Vern is being cremated and some of his ashes will return to his Georgia home to rest with family members there.
