It is with deep sadness, the family of Werner Heinrich Dantes announces his peaceful passing on October 3, 2025, at the age of 95, at Woodingford Lodge in Woodstock, Ontario.
Survived by his beloved wife and soulmate of 67 years, Renate (née Krebs); a devoted father to Andrea (the late Glen Kelly and Vince Panetta), Heidi (Dirk), and Glenn (Christine); a cherished Opa to Shinea (the late Dave Domagala), Nicolette (Steven), Jessi (Adam), Shauni, Matthew, and Nathan, and a proud great Opa to Leila, Lucas, Evelyn, Declan, and Logan. Werner was predeceased by all his immediate family and will be fondly remembered by nieces and nephews in Germany.
Born in Huttenheim, Germany on March 23, 1930, Werner completed his shoemaker apprenticeship and at the age of 21 he courageously immigrated to Canada on his own, determined to build a better life. In post-war Canada, he faced many challenges—finding housing, working various jobs, and learning English—yet he persevered with resilience and optimism. Eventually, he settled in Woodstock, where he fulfilled his dream of opening his own shoe repair business. Through his work, Werner became a well-known and respected member of the community, forming many friendships with those who first came to him as customers.
In 1958, Werner returned to Germany and met the love of his life, Renate, and convinced her to join him in Canada, where they married and built a beautiful life together.
Werner had a lifelong love of sports. He enjoyed soccer and bowling, but it was golf that became his greatest passion. His dedication to the game led him to win several local tournaments and achieve at least three hole-in-ones. As a founding member of the Woodstock German - Canadian Club, Werner and his family shared countless celebrations and friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Music was another of Werner’s joys. He loved playing the accordion and harmonica, often entertaining family and friends with his music. His grandchildren were always delighted in his songs and the happiness he brought through them. Above all, Werner’s greatest legacy was his unwavering love and devotion to his family. His strength, kindness, and joyful spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
A special thank you to Woodstock Hospital and Woodingford Lodge for the compassionate care that was given to Werner over the last year of his life. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to the Woodstock Hospital Foundation in Werner’s name would be greatly appreciated by his family. In keeping with Werner’s wishes, he will be cremated and a private Celebration of Life for family will be held.
